Building A Flourishing Career On Those Fabulous Elements That Make You YOU

The pace of change in the world of technology is extraordinary and set to get even faster. Customers’ expectations are becoming more and more demanding, and as technologists we have never needed to be so multi-faceted – evolving and adapting to identify and satisfy needs before our customers even know they have them.

It would be easy to get distracted by the constant refreshing of our technical knowledge and skillsets, yet it is the non-technical skill evolution that will set us apart and allow us to flourish in a digital career.

Named CIO of the Year in 2018 by Tech Leaders Awards, Wendy will take you on a whistle-stop tour of her own fascinating career journey, and illustrate how you can build a flourishing digital career from the qualities that make you YOU.

Key takeaways include:
• Be clear on the skills needed for the future
• As a female in Technology, understand how you might develop those qualities
• Identify your own opportunities to evolve your digital career

Modulr was established in 2016, and in 2018 the Edinburgh office was launched as the main development hub. In this time the technology team has grown to 50 across software development, devops and QA. In addition to the challenge of recruitment, the team still had to deliver new products. This will be a discussion about how we work in a fast paced, ever-evolving environment while maintaining the quality of code and culture as the business rapidly scales.
Key takeaways include:
• Easier to make a difference and get ideas realised
• Fast paced and open culture because ‘everyone is new’ requires strong and frequent communication
• Lots of different people to learn from and the ability to cross skill, learn new technologies, expand the role and make it your own
• It’s important that everyone can contribute to hiring and has a sense of ownership of the culture and company success
• Autonomous, cross-functional teams empowered to solve problems

As developers, we have the benefit of being able to work just about anywhere in the world. While other professions might require local licences etc, developers only need a computer and they're set to go. However, it doesn't mean that it's easy to start working in a different country.

You might think: "People do it all the time, how difficult can it be"?
In this talk, Abina will highlight some of the difficulties you're likely to run into when you work abroad. She will share her experience of working in different countries and offer some food for thought on how to improve team work - regardless of where you are and who you work with.

Key takeaways include:

  • Yes, it does matter where you come from.
  • Team happiness will increase when the team members understand each other on a personal as well as a cultural level.

Attracting talent is about more than creating industry super-companies, it's about creating a healthy sector that supports sustainable growth and continued innovation and increasing diversity and inspire the next generation to join the sector is key to attaining this. Let's look at what we can do on individual and organisational levels.

Key takeaways include:
- Reaching out to local secondary schools, community centres, clubs etc.
- Be it at parent’s evenings, events ran by external companies etc. to advertise your company in a modern, engaging manner
- It could be to work in partnership to run a seasonal event or support and grow an existing club
- Create work experience programme with secondary schools, open days in your workplace, graduate programme etc. Look at the possibilities for supporting promising female talent at Higher and Advanced Higher (mentorship etc.)

No one disputes that good UX & UI is centred around the human experience and truly understanding it. But, as the diversity and inclusion conversation expands and evolves, we're seeing that it's becoming increasingly fundamental to create different ways for people to participate in the experience and engage with products. In this seminar, we'll look at key principals to adhere to for inclusive UX/UI.

Key takeaways include:
- Can we really provide equivalent experiences and how do we align this to business?
- learning how to seek out and identify points of exclusion and situational challenges
- recognising personal biases and involving the wider user community

Using and interpreting data are increasingly important for success in both life and business. However, generally our data skills have grown over our lifetime, rather than learnt in a formal setting. In this session we consider four different personas: the schoolchild, the citizen, the business leader and the data scientist and discuss the key skills that each need and what can be done to acquire them.

    Key takeaways include:
    - The importance of data literacy across the board
    - Communication and a questioning mind are the most important skills
    - How education will need to change to develop the required skills

“Am I qualified to do this?“. Self reflection and self critique are different sides of the same coin. But what happens when it hurts us, affects our performance, and how we treat others? And can we even turn it into a force for good to help ourselves and others? This is a session for anyone who has ever heard that internal voice; I will explore what we can do about it and how we might be able to turn our kryptonite into a super power for good.

    Key takeaways include:
    - Imposter syndrome is normal
    - Truth is bigger than the ego and the dangers of what happens when it isn’t
    - Confidence in curiosity is more powerful than your confidence in your subject

“Transitions themselves are not the issue, but how well you respond to their challenges!”

Whether you're proactively seeking to start a new phase of your career or an opportunity has been unexpectedly thrust upon you, a career or role change can be full of unexpected challenges, especially if it's not what you've spent time building expertise in. This session aims to help you identify those potential challenges early on (whether they're based around communication, confidence, lack of knowledge or support, the fear of de-skilling, among others) and provide ideas and tools to make your transition as smooth and successful as possible.

    Key Takeaways:
Knowing your value - Identifying and managing the psychological struggle of adapting from a depth to a breadth-based mindset
Practical tools and tips to help bridge the inevitable knowledge and skills gap in the new role

Communicating your ideas to match your imagination and your ideal outcome can be challenging. This is where prototyping comes in – a well-known method in the Tech community to help draft your vision and show the intention behind your design concept to users.
However, we can often find ourselves using specialist and time-consuming methods each time we create a prototype. When in reality there’s a much more efficient method out there to utilise.

In this workshop, I will explore several different prototyping methods that you can add to your toolkit to use for the appropriate time constraints, user and resources available to you.

Workshop attendees will be required to:

    • Bring a laptop with them
    • Install the 'POP – Prototyping on Paper' app on their mobile phone (this app is available on all platforms)

    Key takeaways include:

    • Understand the most efficient prototyping method for your projects needs

One of the hardest tasks in Data Science is around how to use it effectively in a business environment. This field is in many regards in its infancy, mostly because we still have to solve the tension between the fascination new results of the "science" part of it arise and their applicability for practical problems. To me, the most interesting part of doing Data Science is not in the new algorithms coming out of research, but in the use and adaptation of existing, sometimes very old techniques to new problems and more detailed data. To do this effectively, one difficult point in data-driven decision making is in the balancing the achievement of fully-rigorous results, requiring time and effort, with the need for speed. You need to learn to evaluate the impact of your work on the goal and decide where investigations can stop, without sacrificing the robustness of results. Collaboration within the data team as well as insights from domain experts to do this effectively is invaluable.

    Key takeaways:
    - Good data beats better algorithm
    - Collaboration of tech with domain experts is key
    - Statistics, though old-fashioned, is the queen of data science
    - You need to understand when to stop investigations for result-quality and speed
