As developers, we have the benefit of being able to work just about anywhere in the world. While other professions might require local licences etc, developers only need a computer and they're set to go. However, it doesn't mean that it's easy to start working in a different country.

You might think: "People do it all the time, how difficult can it be"?
In this talk, Abina will highlight some of the difficulties you're likely to run into when you work abroad. She will share her experience of working in different countries and offer some food for thought on how to improve team work - regardless of where you are and who you work with.

Key takeaways include:

  • Yes, it does matter where you come from.
  • Team happiness will increase when the team members understand each other on a personal as well as a cultural level.

"You’re amazing, intelligent, curious and with a passion to succeed, so now let’s get you in to a leadership position so you can fly as high as you dare. Preparation is the key to positioning yourself to take on leadership roles, not only tapping into a variety of skills that you already have but being brave enough to learn (and fail) mastering new ones. In this session we will be reviewing the key skills, insights and advice for securing your seat at the leadership table and how to start preparing for it.

Key takeaways include:
• Establishing your authority and getting your voice heard
• Assessing the tools you’re going to need to effectively handle leadership challenges successfully
• Looking at your current role and assessing the opportunities that could be available to get you closer to the next level
• Leading not managing

As the industry evolves at an alarming pace, we're under great pressure to update or completely change our systems. Doing so when we have years of data and processes in place is a huge feat for anyone. In this session, we will look at case studies of implementing large scale digital changes and how adoption was handled and encouraged across orgs.

    Key takeaways include:

    • Aiding user acceptance of new systems
    • Learning how to identify and rectify unknown dependencies on the legacy systems
    • Planning for workflow issues and implementing realistic time scales for adoption

We all need to have difficult conversations at one point in time - whether it's to ask for a raise, bring up an issue or discuss a sensitive but important topic - and it's never easy. However, there are ways to make these cases as painless, and productive as possible. We share the insights and recommendations for several different categories of conversations we have the most trouble with.

Communicating your ideas to match your imagination and your ideal outcome can be challenging. This is where prototyping comes in – a well-known method in the Tech community to help draft your vision and show the intention behind your design concept to users.
However, we can often find ourselves using specialist and time-consuming methods each time we create a prototype. When in reality there’s a much more efficient method out there to utilise.

In this workshop, I will explore several different prototyping methods that you can add to your toolkit to use for the appropriate time constraints, user and resources available to you.

Workshop attendees will be required to:

    • Bring a laptop with them
    • Install the 'POP – Prototyping on Paper' app on their mobile phone (this app is available on all platforms)

    Key takeaways include:

    • Understand the most efficient prototyping method for your projects needs
    • Acquire the tools to tailor the interactive section to use in your own workshops, helping spark innovation and create a level the playing field for communicating ideas

Nowadays, it is generally accepted that in a knowledge-driven, competitive business environment, technological innovation is a principal determinant of successful performance. But the role of intellectual property in innovation is often overlooked. Specifically, as technology continues to advance and develop does the current system of intellectual property actually hinder innovation?

    Key takeaways include:

    • Understanding exactly what intellectual property is and its impacts to business
    • Utilising intellectual property to reduce risk in taking innovative technology to market
    • Establishing that innovation is not the same as invention
    • Assessing intellectual property’s role in helping SMEs with access to financing and technical facilities

How many times during the day do you swipe, use apps, check social media, send messages or even just generally handle your phone? Why is it so hard to stay offline? To try and 'stay ahead' we often think that being connected to work will help avoid future stress but it's ultimately having the opposite effect. Let's start 'unplugging' to help us ultimately be more 'on'.

    Key takeaways include:

    • Understanding the long-term business effects of being constantly connected
    • Establishing a technology-free space – Starting with an hour a day and build to a night a week
    • Encouraging colleagues to establish similar boundaries and limits

The common misconception is that we need to find an older, wiser mentor who can support us through our career and help guide our path. But it's important that we change this narrative and take a deeper dive into what we really need to look for in a mentor as well as begin identifying the qualities in ourselves that make us great mentors for other women (and men!) in our industry.

    Key takeaways include:

    • Learn how you can find mentors who can help you build a meaningful career
    • Understand how to then leverage those skills in your professional life and inspire others in the workplace
    • Determine how to support a programme in which the mentor and mentee are equally dedicated to success
